Dating firearms serial number
Please note that during the years of 1999, 2000, & 2001 (highlighted in red above), Remington did not stamp the date code on the barrels.
The date code during these years was just placed on the box.
It is not necessarily the very first serial number shipped, but it can be used to determine the approximate year your Ruger firearm was shipped.
Ruger does not necessarily produce firearms in serial number order.
This means that sometimes you will have to consider the specific model of Remington firearm that you have.
For details on your specific serial number you may contact our Service Department: 336-949-5200 For serial numbers manufactured prior to our electronic records, or for an official letter confirming the details on your firearm please download and mail in the Request for Letter of Authenticity form.

This information is no substitute for obtaining a Winchester Factory Letter from the Cody Firearms Museum (available for certain models and serial ranges) which in addition to the Serial Number Application Date, normally provide the original Received In Warehouse Date and Date Shipped from Winchester factory.
For purposes of determining if your gun is legally considered an “antique” (pre-1899 DOM), the BATF has told us they use the DOM dates published by the manufacture (Winchester).
